Amazon Kindle

February 10th, 2009

Amazon is excited to introduce Amazon Kindle 2, the next generation wireless reading device. With a sleek and thin design that makes Kindle 2 as thin as a typical magazine and lighter than a paperpack, the new Kindle has seven times more storage and now holds over 1,500 books. It has a longer battery life and faster page turns. An advanced display provides even crisper images and clearer text for an improved book-like reading experience. And Kindle 2 even reads to you, with “Read to Me”, our new Text to Speech feature.

With Kindle 2 we kept everything readers love about the original Kindle—the convenience of reading what you want, when you want it, the immediacy of getting a book wirelessly delivered in less than 60 seconds, and Kindle’s ability to “disappear” in your hands so you can get lost in the author’s words. We’re also excited to announce that the Kindle Store has over 230,000 ebooks available.

Kindle 2 is available for pre-order starting today for $359 and will ship later this month . We also have a wide variety of Kindle accessories available, including new covers from Cole Haan, Patagonia, and Belkin and more.

Haier 18 Bottle Wine Cooler [Update]

January 4th, 2009

Our Haier 18 bottle wine cooler just recently blew its fuses again. That’s twice in 2 years. It blows the 5amp 250v fuse on the 12v side of the power supply. First time it blew one of the two units and we wondered by it was not cooling well for a couple of months until the 2nd one blew and the whole unit stopped. This time it blew both close enough together that we only noticed it stopped completely. Instead of replacing again with a 5A 250v glass tube fuse that is soldered in place, I’m going to use a breaker or fuse socket to make things easier the next time. Some reports online that these units draw more than 5A.

Update: I replaced the 5amp glass fuses with socketed 5amp automotive ATC style fuses. One fan was a bit loud so I put the 5amp fuse with it.

Missing Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic[UPDATE]

December 1st, 2008

OK, after waiting for these for a couple months I gave up and ordered an iPod Touch. I’m sure now that I ordered they’ll come out soon and be standard. At least I saved $30 on the Touch.

I may get this one from Target if I think I need a mic soon.

UPDATE: Very next day they are available to order! Not included with new iPods yet and not shipping for a couple of weeks.

USPS is the worst!

October 24th, 2008

Now I’m madder at the USPS than the stock market or ebay! They lost my equity line payment. I had rolled my USAA credit card interest free balance to the equity line to take advantage of another interest free USAA offer. So I when USAA was paid off I mailed my equity line payment with a check from my USAA account. USPS seems to have lost it (or Wachovia is sitting on it somewhere). Everyday I wait for someone to find the check, it costs me more. If they don’t find it soon I will have to stop payment ($29) on the USAA check. I did call USAA to raise my limit so I could payoff 1/2 the Wachovia equity line with a check at the branch today. I figure I’m going to end up paying $30-100 just because I thought mailing it would be better than taking 5 minutes to go to the branch to make the payment. Add this to the difficult shipping insurance catch with my ebay experience and I’m totally off the USPS. Hey Obama, sell it to UPS, Fed Ex. or Apple.

Fixed Capresso Ultima 121 in 5 Minutes

September 16th, 2008

Yes, a single wire connector was loosened in shipping. Cost me $20 postage, $1.25 ebay listing fee and a $140 sale. I can’t blame anyone but the USPS, paypal, ebay and the temporary buyer. All contributed to making something simple in to a minor disaster. Please avoid all of them.

A now working Capresso Ultima 121 video.

The symptoms of the Capresso Ultima problems were, when you went to make coffee/espresso, it dripped water in to the base and would not flow through the coffee grounds. The hot water, steam and other functions of the machine worked fine.

The bottom of the Capresso Ultima 121 is held in place by three small torx security screws.

This picture shows the machine from the bottom with the bottom cover now removed. In the exact center of this picture are two connections attached to the left of a square shaped object. The lower one with a blue wire and the upper one with a white wire. The connector with the white wire was off the terminal when I opened the machine. I think this must control the valve that lets the high pressure water flow to the coffee grounds. By not opening the valve the water had no where to go but through the pressure release mechanism and in to the overflow tray.
